Ad Gerritsen

Albertus Gradus (Ad) Gerritsen (Arnhem, 18 March 1940 - Arnhem, 2 April 2015) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist who also worked with mixed media on collages and spatial objects. He trained at the academy in Arnhem but left it early; as a painter he is regarded as self-taught.

The human figure is central to his work, not as portraiture but as a personally formulated commentary on the way the image of humanity is treated in visual culture. He drew his inspiration from the daily abundance of mass media. In the 1970s he worked as a creative therapist in psychiatry and in prisons; later he taught at the AKI in Enschede.

In 2015 Museum Arnhem devoted a solo exhibition to him under the title 'Berichten van de spotvogel'. The museum holds around 120 of his works.
