Bram Bogart

Abraham van den Boogaart (1921-2012), known as Bram Bogart, was a Dutch-Belgian abstract painter. Self-taught, he began as a house painter before turning to fine art. His early work was expressionist, influenced by Van Gogh; later he evolved towards abstract compositions.

Bogart developed a unique technique in which he mixed oil with water to create thick, durable works that dried from within. He worked in Paris alongside Corneille and Appel, but remained independent of the CoBrA movement.

After acquiring Belgian nationality in 1969, he spent most of his later career in Brussels, where he was regarded as one of the foremost representatives of matter painting.
