Eugene Brands
1913, Amsterdam–2002, Amsterdam · Amsterdam · Nunspeet
Eugène Brands (Amsterdam, 15 January 1913 - Amsterdam, 15 January 2002) was a Dutch CoBrA artist. He trained in advertising design at the Amsterdam School of Applied Arts, but soon chose the free artist's path; as an artist he was self-taught.
In 1948 he became a member of the experimental group Reflex, which evolved into CoBrA. A year after its founding he left CoBrA to withdraw for ten years into his studio, inspired by 'the world of the child'. A lifelong fascination with the cosmos runs like a thread through his work. From 1967 he taught fine-art painting in 's-Hertogenbosch.
