Jef Diederen

Jef Diederen (Heerlen, 25 August 1920 - Amsterdam, 26 March 2009) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist, counted among the so-called 'Amsterdam Limburgers'. He studied at the school of applied arts in Maastricht and at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, where Karel Appel and Corneille were among his fellow students.

Until 1955 he painted mainly landscape gouaches of his native region of South Limburg; after that he developed, like Ger Lataster, in an abstract direction, lyrical-abstract with a gentle character despite strong colours. He is regarded as one of the leading post-war graphic artists of the Netherlands and received the Jeanne Oosting Prize in 1987.
