Leonardus Josephus van der Heijden (born 2 March 1938 in 's-Hertogenbosch) studied at the school of applied arts in Maastricht and at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Since 1963 he has lived and worked in Amsterdam.

He worked as a sculptor, ceramicist, painter and draughtsman and made abstract objects in ceramics and wood. In 1973-74 he designed the bear and polar bear enclosure at Artis in Amsterdam. Work by his hand was acquired by, among others, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
