Richard Smeets (born 1955 in Gennep) studied at the Stadsacademie in Maastricht, specialising in applied arts and monumental design. He developed into a nationally and internationally respected painter.
His abstract-figurative work is based on everyday experiences and travels through Europe and beyond. Smeets describes his creative process in three phases: 'Experience becomes memory, memory becomes dream, and dream becomes matter in paint and colour.'
He has exhibited extensively in the United States, Denmark, Malaysia, Germany and the Netherlands.
