Walasse Ting (1929-2010) was born in Wuxi, China, but grew up in Shanghai. He left China in 1946 and, by way of Hong Kong, arrived in Paris in 1952, where he became friends with Pierre Alechinsky and Karel Appel. He settled in New York in 1960, where he shared an Amsterdam studio with Appel and Corneille.
In the 1970s he developed his recognisable style: Chinese calligraphic brushstrokes as contours, filled with vivid acrylic paint. His subjects - women, flora and fauna - are rendered with great vitality.
Although self-taught, his works are held in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Chicago Art Institute, the Centre Pompidou and the Guggenheim Museum.
